Integrating Language Literacy and Music Learning Across Elementary Classrooms: Student Learning, Shared Practice, Collaborative Planning

Classroom teacher/music teacher TEAMS encouraged to attend together.

This interactive workshop will provide presentations from a first grade teacher and an elementary music specialist as well as team planning time.  From both classroom teacher and music teacher perspectives, learn authentic points of integration as well as naturals parallels in student learning.  With the ultimate goal of increasing language and music skills for students, classroom teachers and music specialists will dialogue about how language literacy and music can be woven seamlessly into both curricular areas.  Emphasizing the integrity of teaching materials and teacher practices in both language learning and music learning, we will focus on how repertoire/content, daily routines, and classroom activities in the general and music classrooms can enhance student learning by intentionally integrating one subject area into the other.

Creative Collaboration in the General Music Classroom - Sponsored by the American Composers Forum

6 CEU hours per day (12 hours total)

 

Spend two days with fellow general music teachers exploring of the rewards and challenges of fostering collaborative musical creativity in the general music class.  Participants will examine models for classroom activities that integrate benchmarks from the Minnesota State Music CREATE Standard with other music learning outcomes.   Working with a practicing music teacher and a local composer, participants will consider approaches that foster a collaborative classroom environment and ways to structure musical experiences that maximize students' creative opportunities.

 

Teachers will be encouraged to bring a "work in progress" - a lesson plan with a creating music focus. Time will be provided for teachers to share lesson plans with colleagues, and to develop new activities for creative musical experiences. Peers and instructors will respond and provide feedback on lesson plans. A collection of participants' revised lesson plans will be provided for each teacher after the workshop and may be available to teachers nationwide through the Perpich Center for Arts Education and the American Composers Forum websites.

More Than Just Loops: How To Compose, Record, and Edit Using Apple GarageBand

Share files to YouTube, MySpace, SoundCloud, and other web sites with a capital letter in the middle of their names.

Carnatic Music - the Classical Music Tradition from Southern India-: Intro to Indian Music and Activities for Your Classroom

Carnatic music is one of the oldest musical forms of the world It is over 2000 years old and had its origins in South India, according to some historians it is the original music of that country.  Get a glimpse into this oral tradition that will encompass not only music but also some history and geography of the region.  Presented by Nirmala Rajasekar who has over 30 years of experience performing this unique art form.  Focus will be on singing and the veena, ancient classical Indian instrument.

Teaching Guitar in the Classroom

This workshop is for the music teacher who is teaching a guitar class

but has only limited experience playing the guitar and for those teachers wanting a refresher course.  The workshop will cover basic technique - the physical part of playing the guitar e.g. holding the guitar, left hand position, right hand position and using a pick, right hand position and fingerpicking, chords, strumming, hammer-ons and pull-offs etc.

á      Different styles of guitar playing will also be covered.

á      Curriculum ideas and materials will be discussed.

á      Bring your guitar.

 

The workshop will be presented by James Allen, guitar specialist on faculty at The Perpich Center for Education. James also teaches guitar at MacPhail Center for Music and has worked as a professional guitarist in the Twin Cities for the past 20 years.

 

Moving Matters!  Learn the BrainDance for Yourself and Your K-6 Students

What is the BrainDance and how can it enhance your teaching and your students' experiences and learning?  In this workshop you will learn several versions of the BrainDance, a set of movement patterns that replicate the movements a child goes through for brain development during their first year of life.  By learning the BrainDance and basic dance concepts, you will have new tools to give to your students next year.   Movement work will be balanced with other non movement work to make the day interesting and safe for all. There will be time for processing this work and how you will be able to use it in your own classes.

Adding Depth and Breadth to Brain-Compatible Dance Education in Your Classroom

This is a class for those who have learned about the BrainDance and want more practice and applications for movement in their music classes.  We will focus on ways to use the BrainDance, concept based movement and basic locomotor and non-locomotor movements.  In addition to active learning, we will look at why using movement in your classes is worthwhile for both you and your students.

Blueprints for Creativity: Making Music with Music Technology for the Elementary and Middle School Classroom

—Learn how to incorporate music technology into your classroom.

—Discover new ways to meet the ÒcreateÓ standard at the elementary level.

—Create and perform a new composition with other participants.

 

In this hands-on composition workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create and perform a collaborative composition using music notation software and the Ôblueprints for creativityÕ model. Participants should bring small instruments to play, such as hand percussion, recorders, and Orff instruments. This workshop is co-presented with the American Composers Forum.

 

Janika Vandervelde is the author of Music By Kids For Kids, a composition curriculum commissioned by the American Composers Forum. The curriculum helps students generate musical material quickly using music technology, and then develop this material into a more extensive composition using both instinct and design elements.

Dalcroze in the Music Classroom

Spend a day exploring the Dalcroze approach to music and musicianship.  Participants will experience the Dalcroze work for themselves, as adult musicians, through eurhythmics, solfege, and improvisation activities in the morning. In the afternoon, practical lessons for various age groups and types of students (elementary general music, private piano, orchestra, etc.) will be introduced.  Participants will discover how they might incorporate movement or other aspects of the Dalcroze approach into existing curricula.  No previous experience in Dalcroze is needed.  Piano playing will be incorporated into the workshop - but all levels of piano skills are welcome.
