Groovy (Sibelius): Music Technology Software for Ages 5+
In collaboration with Cloquet Public Schools

July 27th, 9:00-4:00

Cost: $25 for day

Explore all three levels of Groovy, Shapes, Jungle, and City, created for students in elementary and Middle School. This interactive software teaches the basics of sound, rhythm, pitch and composition using pictures and animation, beginning with simple notation and progressing to major and minor scales. Groovy also encourages creativity and composition.


The Interactive Whiteboard as a Teaching and Learning Tool in the K-12 Music Classroom: Activities, Curriculum, and Assessment

How can Interactive Whiteboards enhance learning and facilitate assessment in the K-12 music classroom?

  • Learn Interactive Whiteboard basics -First Tech, a local Interactive Whiteboard support and sales company, will be on site to answer any questions.
  • Experience model lessons presented by your fellow music educators.
  • Explore how assessment can be handled using Interactive Whiteboards
  • Share lessons, templates, web resources, and ideas about creating your own lessons
  • Discover what adaptations can be made for Interactive Whiteboard lessons if your classroom only has an LCD projector (but lacks an interactive whiteboard right now)

Composing, Improvising, and Arranging in the K-8 General Music Classroom: Activities, Curriculum, Assessment, and Standards

Looking for more ideas on improvising, arranging, and composing in your classroom? Join us for a day filled with sample lessons, assessments, and the opportunity to create a lesson for use in your own classroom. You’ll leave with ideas from seasoned teachers, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues and ask questions about activities and assessments that relate directly to your classroom. Model lessons presented by Kim Kroetsch, MikeCroswell, and Nyssa Brown.


Recording Your Band, Orchestra, or Choir: GarageBand in the Music Classroom

Discover an easy way to record your music students using a Macintosh computer or laptop and GarageBand software. Make an archive of their performances, and show your students how much they've progressed throughout the year by recording their rehearsals! This is a "hands-on" class, and no prior recording experience is necessary.


Loops, Mixing and Accompaniments using GarageBand: Composing and Arranging in the Music Classroom
July 31st, 8:00-4:00

Learn the ins and outs of using GarageBand for arranging and composition. Using the built-in loops, we’ll make the musical equivalent of cutout magazine collages. Learn to record instruments, create accompaniment tracks, and even print out notation. Basic mixing will also be covered, in addition to ideas for using GarageBand in general music courses or as a theory supplement.
